Blaine Gabbert is playing so badly right now that the Jaguars may consider something practically unheard of in the NFL: Taking Top 10 quarterbacks in back-to-back drafts.

Gabbert?s horrible game in Thursday night?s loss to the Falcons has continued a horrible rookie season for the quarterback the Jaguars chose with the 10th overall pick in this year?s NFL draft. Gabbert is last in the league with a passer rating of 65.6, and he looks lost out there. It?s tough to see why the Jaguars? next coach, whoever he is, would want Gabbert as his starting quarterback.

So would the Jaguars, who will likely draft somewhere between the fourth and 10th overall picks, take a quarterback? It?s impossible to say right now, as we have no idea who the new coach will be or what kind of offense he?ll run. We also don?t know where new owner Shahid Khan stands on the matter, and whether he?ll take a hands-on or hands-off approach to the draft. But if Baylor?s Robert Griffin III or USC?s Matt Barkley is available to the Jaguars, they?d have to think long and hard about drafting one of them in the Top 10.

That almost never happens. The Cowboys used their first-round picks in 1989 and 1990 on quarterbacks Troy Aikman and Steve Walsh, but the 1990 pick was used in the supplemental draft. (The Cowboys traded Walsh to the Saints in 1990.) The last time a team used consecutive first-round picks in the regular draft on quarterbacks was in 1982-83, when the Baltimore Colts drafted Art Schlichter and John Elway. But that was a highly unusual circumstance in which neither one of those quarterbacks played for the team in 1983: Schlichter was suspended for the entire 1983 season, and the Colts traded Elway to the Broncos before he ever played a down for Baltimore.

Before the Colts, you have to go all the way back to the early 1960s Los Angeles Rams to find a team that used first-round draft picks on quarterbacks in back-to-back years. The Rams actually drafted quarterbacks in the first round three years in a row: Roman Gabriel in 1962, Terry Baker in 1963 and Bill Munson in 1964. But Baker was a college quarterback who played halfback in the NFL, so that?s not quite the same thing, either. Prior to those Rams, the last team to draft quarterbacks in back-to-back first rounds was the 49ers, who took Earl Morrall in 1956 and John Brodie in 1957. The 49ers traded Morrall to the Steelers before the 1957 season.

What does this history lesson tell us? NFL teams only take quarterbacks in back-to-back first rounds under the most extraordinary of circumstances. If Jaguars G.M. Gene Smith takes a quarterback in the first round a year after he took Gabbert 10th overall, he?ll be doing something NFL general managers just don?t do. But Gabbert might be bad enough to make the Jaguars do it.

Game Controllers for Android Smartphones and Tablets (ContributorNetwork)

According to an infographic published on the Android Developers blog, more than 1 in 4 of the 10 billion applications downloaded on the Android Market have been games. That's roughly 2.5 billion games across all the Android gadgets. Where there are games, though, there are game controls, and compared to game consoles most Android devices are lacking.

The first Android smartphones lacked multitouch screens and needed a trackball or touchpad to play games. Today's tablets and smartphones let you use two thumbs on the screen at once, plus tilt controls. But the screens give no tactile feedback, and it's easy to lose your place at first since you can't feel where the edges are.

What's the solution? For many, it's a hardware game controller, which allows more responsive gameplay ... or at least lets you see more of the screen while you're playing. Many Android games work with controllers, and more are added all the time.

Here are a few kinds of controllers that are available:

The Xperia Play

Sony's "PlayStation Certified" Android smartphone isn't a separate controller that you can buy. It's a phone with a slider controller, instead of a slider keyboard. Instead of twin analog sticks (like PlayStation Dual Shock controllers), it uses two analog touchpads, but ridges in the plastic help keep your thumbs centered and guide you to them. It also has a D-Pad and shoulder buttons, to allow the Xperia Play to run PSOne games.

Zeemote

"The patented Zeemote controller" bears an uncanny resemblance to the Nunchuk part of a Wii Remote. It's held in a single hand, and has an analog stick on the top plus four thumb- and finger-triggers. It uses Bluetooth to connect to your Android device, and as of this writing there are "about 258" apps listed in the Android Market as being compatible with it.

Existing game console controllers

According to Droidgamers, it's possible to pair a SixAxis PlayStation 3 controller with certain Android devices. It works with "many of your favorite games and applications," according to the according to Brad Molen of Engadget.

DroidMote

Another tutorial on Droidgamers explains how to use your Android phone as a controller, in order to play games on an Android tablet. You need to have the DroidMote app installed on both the phone and the tablet a complex procedure to map out buttons to your games. On the plus side, it supports tilt controls and the Xperia Play's game controller.

Birth Defects Seem Rare in Kids of Childhood Cancer Survivors (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Dec. 12 (HealthDay News) -- Children of parents who survived childhood cancer are unlikely to suffer from birth defects, finds a new study that should allay some concerns about long-term effects of treatment.

It appears that DNA damage done by chemotherapy and radiation of the reproductive organs doesn't increase the risk that children will inherit those damaged genes, researchers say.

"We found that DNA damage from radiation and chemotherapy with alkylating agents are not associated with the risk of genetic birth defects in the offspring," said lead researcher Lisa Signorello, an associate professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

"This is really reassuring," she said. "This is one less thing for childhood cancer survivors to worry about." The prevalence of birth defects among the children of cancer survivors is similar to that of the general population, added Signorello, who's also a senior epidemiologist at the International Epidemiology Institute in Rockville, Md.

While life-saving in many cases, radiotherapy and chemotherapy with alkylating agents, such as busulfan, cyclophosphamide and dacarbazine, can damage DNA.

Signorello noted that childhood cancer survivors have a higher rate of infertility and a greater risk of having miscarriage, preterm birth and low birth-weight infants.

Although cancer treatment can cause DNA damage to the sperm and eggs, "it may be that these damages get filtered out," she said.

Genetic-based birth defects are rare, accounting for about 3 percent of births. Although earlier research found little or no increased risk for birth defects among the children of cancer survivors, the studies were small in size and lacked detailed data about radiation and chemotherapy, such as radiation doses to the testes and ovaries, the researchers noted.

The report was published in the Dec. 12 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

For the study, Signorello and colleagues collected data on more than 20,000 children who had survived cancer. The data were taken from the 1970 and 1986 Childhood Cancer Survivor Study. Fifty-seven percent of them had been treated for leukemia or lymphoma.

The researchers also looked at the health of nearly 4,700 children of these survivors.

Of the parents treated for cancer, 63 percent had radiation therapy and 44 percent of men and 50 percent of women had chemotherapy.

Among their children, 2.7 percent had at least one birth defect such as Down syndrome, achondroplasia (dwarfism), or cleft lip.

Three percent of the mothers exposed to radiation or treated with alkylating chemotherapy had a child with a genetic birth defect, compared with 3.5 percent of mothers who survived cancer, but weren't exposed to these treatments, the researchers found.

Only 1.9 percent of children of the cancer-surviving fathers had these birth defects, compared with 1.7 percent of children of fathers who did not have chemotherapy or radiation, they said.

"This is very encouraging, because there has been a worry," said Dr. Michael Katz, senior vice president for research and global programs at the March of Dimes.

Dr. Jeanette Falck Winther, a senior researcher at the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology at the Danish Cancer Society in Copenhagen and co-author of an accompanying journal editorial, said the study findings should address some of the reproductive concerns of childhood cancer survivors, geneticists and pediatric oncologists.

"Our hope is that this reassuring information will be used by the physicians in counseling childhood cancer survivors who desire and are able to have children," she said.

Lauren Scruggs, Fashion Model and Blogger, Severely Injured in Propeller Accident

Lauren Scruggs, a model and celebrity fashion blogger, suffered severe injuries after she accidentally walked into a spinning airplane propeller in Texas on Saturday.

Scruggs, 23, who runs the fashion blog LOLO and worked in the wardrobe department of Gossip Girl, was climbing out of a two-seater plane in McKinney, Tex.

She lost her left hand in the accident and suffered major injuries to her face as well. The hand was amputated by surgeons and the FAA is investigating further.

"Struck on the left side of her body, Lauren's hand, head, and shoulder area were hit," a family spokesperson who posted on the website Caring Bridge said.

"After exiting a propeller plane, an accident occurred where she walked into the front of the prop," the post reads. "Lauren's surgery went very well this morning."

"She is now resting in ICU with the family. She is able to open her right eye to see while her left eye is still bandaged. Please continue to pray for the vision of her left eye, as we will not know the status of her sight for some time."

She was flying around the state to look at Christmas lights. We wish her the best and hope that she's able to recover from this as fully and quickly as possible.

Weather Underground Forecast for Tuesday, December 06, 2011. The most active weather in the country will continue to be in the East on Tuesday due to a strong storm. This strong and wet storm will make its way through the eastern third of the country, spreading mostly rain from the Gulf Coast through the Northeast. The heaviest of this rain will fall in New England and the higher elevations of the Appalachians. In the colder air to the east of the storm, some snow showers will fall in western New England and may be enhanced by the relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes.

Dry conditions are anticipated for much of the rest of the country, with the one exception being in the Southern Rockies where high elevation morning snow showers will give way to cool, but dry, conditions.

Chilly morning temperatures will continue in California, possibly damaging some crops and plants. This will continue the first significant frost period of the season as temperatures will dip into the 20s in the Central Valley of California.

Election official: Congo results may be delayed (AP)

KINSHASA, Congo ? The spokesman for Congo's election commission said that the body is working to release results of last week's election before midnight Tuesday as required by law, but a delay may be inevitable if tally sheets are not compiled in time.

Matthieu Mpita told The Associated Press by telephone that helicopters had been dispatched to the remote corners of the country to pick up compilation sheets. He said the numbers have not been transmitted to the central compilation center in Kinshasa due to a technical glitch with the communications equipment.

Mpita said: "It's our objective to release the results before midnight tonight," but it depends on whether the body gets a full count.

Meanwhile, journalists attempting to approach the home of opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi heard gunfire. The opposition has already said they reject the results.

ATLANTA (AP) ? Rapidly becoming a mere footnote in the presidential race, Herman Cain sent mixed signals Friday on whether he would abandon his beleaguered White House bid on Saturday after a woman's allegation of an extramarital affair.

He said he would make a "major announcement" on whether he would press on ? at an event still being billed as the grand opening of a new headquarters.

It is the latest ? and perhaps final ? twist in a campaign saga that has taken the Georgia businessman from unknown longshot to surprise frontrunner to embattled tabloid subject.

He arrived at his suburban Atlanta home on Friday afternoon to talk with his wife of 42 years, Gloria, about whether to press on after his campaign was rocked by multiple sexual harassment allegations and this week's claim that he had a 13-year affair. He denies wrongdoing. It was their first face-to-face meeting since the allegation was made public.

As night fell, campaign aides who were optimistic earlier Friday that Cain would press on said privately they expected that he would exit the race.

Earlier, in a speech in Rock Hill, S.C., Cain wouldn't disclose whether he would drop out but told supporters to stay tuned. He said he would clarify the next steps of the campaign and assured backers the affair claim was "garbage." But he also said he needed to consider what he would do with campaign donations already banked if he dropped out of the race.

"Nobody's going to make me make that prematurely," Cain told a crowd of about 100 people. "That's all there is to it."

"My wife and family comes first. I've got to take that into consideration," Cain added. "I don't doubt the support that I have. Just look at the people who are here."

Cain had not seen his wife since Ginger White, 46, came forward and said she had a sexual affair with Cain that lasted more than a decade. He has said they were only friends but acknowledged that he helped pay her monthly bills and expenses. His wife, Cain said, did not know of the friendship with White.

The former Godfather's pizza executive said he is reassessing whether his presidential bid is still viable.

But it was difficult to imagine a path forward with just a month until the lead-off Iowa caucuses.

Polls suggest his popularity has taken a deep hit.

A Des Moines Register poll released Friday showed Cain's support plummeting, with backing from 8 percent of Republican caucusgoers in Iowa, down from 23 percent a month ago.

Fundraising has also fallen off. He issued an email appeal to supporters on Friday asking for donations, in an attempt to gauge whether his financial support has dried up.

"I need to know that you are behind me 100 percent," Cain told backers. "In today's political environment, the only way we can gauge true support is by the willingness of our supporters to invest in this effort.

A political novice, Cain leveraged strong tea party support to hurtle to the front of the Republican pack in October casting himself as an anti-establishment outsider. His catchy 9-9-9 tax overhaul proposal helped his rise. But his effort soon lost altitude.

He fumbled policy questions, and his campaign has been reeling since it was revealed a little more than a month ago that the National Restaurant Association paid settlements to two women who claimed Cain sexually harassed them while he was president of the organization. A third woman told The Associated Press that Cain made inappropriate sexual advances but that she didn't file a complaint. A fourth woman also stepped forward to accuse Cain of groping her in a car in 1997.

Cain has denied wrongdoing in all cases. And his campaign was taking some steps to blunt the drumbeat of allegations.

It unveiled a "Women for Herman Cain" webpage with testimonials from female backers, some urging him to stay in the race. It was led by Gloria Cain.

The candidate's wife ? who's not been on the campaign trail ? has drawn her own support as the allegations against her husband have piled up.

A Facebook page "I Stand With Gloria Cain" had attracted more than 400 supporters by Friday afternoon.

On Friday, Cain urged backers in South Carolina to look past the allegations.

"There's a lot of garbage on the Internet. There's a lot of garbage out there on the TV. There's a lot of garbage out there about me, don't you know? There's a lot of misinformation out there. You have to stay informed and check out the facts for yourself," Cain said.

He added: "I'm on this journey for a reason. I don't look back."

Word of a pending announcement took some aides by surprise.

"I am learning this as you're learning it," said Cain's Iowa campaign chairman, Steve Grubbs, who met Thursday with campaign manager Mark Block.

The two outlined a December travel schedule for Cain, who began advertising on television again in Iowa on Friday.

As of Friday afternoon, Cain was scheduled to participate in the two Iowa debates this month, hold a media announcement in Iowa on Dec. 12 and tour the state at the end of the month.

"That's sort of the plan, very tentatively," Grubbs said. "All that could change."

Georgia supporters set to attend the Saturday event in Atlanta ? billed as a headquarters celebration ? were taken aback by the news that an announcement was coming.

"I have heard nothing," said state Sen. Josh McKoon, a prominent Cain backer who will stand with him Saturday.
