Police surveillance video footage of George Zimmerman hours after he shot Trayvon Martin does not appear to show any injuries or bloodstains on the man who claims he killed the Florida teen in self defense February 26.
His attorney says the video is too grainy to be revealing, however.
The footage, obtained by ABC News late Wednesday, shows the handcuffed Zimmerman getting out of the police car, unaided, and walking into the police station where he was escorted after the shooting in Sanford, Fla. Watch:
In the police tape, taken about four hours after the deadly incident, there are no visible signs of injuries to Zimmerman's head or blood on his clothes.
However, he is wearing a red jacket, which could obscure a lot.
Zimmerman's attorney Craig Sonner described the video as "very grainy" on NBC's Today, noting that Zimmerman had been "cleaned-up" and received first aid care in the hours between the incident and his arrival at the police station.
Sonner previously said that his client suffered a broken nose and a gash to his head during the altercation in which he says Zimmerman feared for his life.
Appearing on CNN Wednesday, Martin family lawyer Benjamin Crump called the video “the smoking gun,” proving the self-defense allegation is not true.
“I think the video speaks for itself. You don’t see any broken nose. You don’t see any blood on his head. You don’t see any stuff on the back of his clothes."
"You have to ask why did this police chief, state attorney and now this acting police chief conspire to protect George Zimmerman for killing this unarmed teenager?"
A neighborhood watch volunteer, Zimmerman was released without being charged. The Trayvon Martin case has since become a national obsession.
Richard Kurtz, the funeral director who prepared Martin's body, was asked if there were any signs on his hands that the victim had punched someone.
"The only thing that I was able to see was the gunshot wound," Kurtz told MSNBC. "I could not see evidence like he had been punching somebody."
"It just did not add up to me."
The self-defense claim clearly deserves scrutiny, but whether this is sufficient proof that there was no struggle is something investigators must determine.
The father of the groom speech is contained in the vast majority of cases not looked as among the prime speeches accompanied by a wedding. Little question an excellent man speaking or perhaps the father of your fiancee speaking is visible to be a given speech, but in the present day the father of your groom as well as the shipping of the speech emerged as vital. This speaking provides each father time to greet the bride?s family and welcome his son?s wife in to actually their own individual family. Moreover it is basic to actually stress which you?ll regularly be in your home them during the entire of need. All this speaking really should be shipped with ingredient of humor plus placing slight give attention to severe talk.
When contemplating the father of the bride wedding speeches , it requires to certainly be a superb one. The details conveyed towards the bride and bridegroom should be inside of a nice way. His speaking must list a warm accept to the family members and friends. The groom?s daddy must present your daughter?s groom and bridegroom to everybody gathered for the ceremony. He could discuss about his son while using outstanding high class which has delivered him with an excellent position. His speaking should have some comedy, aside from the groom?s childhood stories. It has to include some enthusiasm to your individuals understood truth be told there.
There is certainly certain guidelines in writing a speech. To consider those basic regulations to truly show you manage your speaking. Have wants to let it become small, comprehensive and completed. The attendees are simply get tired having long speeches. To generate it more exciting, include humor on your toast so they can mock a few instances. Also, do not forget to endure outline in your speaking which may function as your hints once delivering it. Following these outlines will certainly make it more comfortable and up-to-date so you might finish your distinct letter.
Opening using a famous cite are often tested procedure. Use any renowned individual?s phrases for a robust result and next we are able to by having a starting point, what you can begin to actually expand. Then, be sure that you can show by yourself. Although we demand the wedding guests to know you, it is really nevertheless good that you in plain terms let everyone evaluate which your partnership is with the groom, that you will be no less than the male of the prime himself. After launching by yourself, thank your guests and welcome them to nationwide holiday reception, particularly when you are the swarm or simply co-host of your event.
A lot of the Wedding Speeches Father of Bride and toasts yourself obtain while joining wedding events may be fall short or are lengthy and unexciting to ensure guests doze off in sheer boredom. This is simply not an overstatement in the slightest degree because even if we like it or never, all of this usually happens much of the time. If you undertake that short structure for ones father of your groom speaking it is advisable to at least get started in the speech. When you are looking to conform to it slowly and gradually to find it very challenging to get moving subsequently try having it apart.
The Father of the Groom Jokes needs to be well written and completely delivered. To produce that possible, you should take time reading creatively-written examples of Father of the Groom Speech.
ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? Powerful supercomputers have shed light on the behaviour of key sub-atomic particles, in a development that could help explain why there is almost no anti-matter in the universe.
An international collaboration of scientists, including physicists from the Universities of Edinburgh and Southampton, has reported a landmark calculation of the decay of an elementary particle called a kaon, using breakthrough techniques on some of the world's fastest supercomputers.
The calculation took 54 million processor hours on the IBM BlueGene/P supercomputer at the Argonne Leadership Class Facility (ALCF) at Argonne National Laboratory in the US.
The new research, reported in the March 30 issue of Physical Review Letters, represents an important milestone in understanding kaon decays -- which are a fundamental process in physics. It is also inspiring the development of a new generation of supercomputers that will allow the next step in this research.
"It has taken several decades of theoretical developments and the arrival of very powerful supercomputers to enable physicists to control the interactions of the quarks and gluons, the constituents of the elementary particles, with sufficient precision to explore the limits of the standard model and to test new theories," says Chris Sachrajda, Professor of Physics at the University of Southampton, one of the members of the research team publishing the new findings. "The present calculation focuses on the fundamental question of how we arrived at a universe composed almost exclusively of matter with virtually no antimatter, but the theoretical and computational techniques of Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (see below) will also be central to unravelling the underlying framework behind the discoveries anticipated at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN."
The process by which a kaon decays into two lighter particles known as pions was explored in a 1964 Nobel Prize-winning experiment. This revealed the first experimental evidence of a phenomenon known as charge-parity (CP) violation -- a lack of symmetry between particles and their corresponding antiparticles that may explain why the Universe is made of matter, and not antimatter.
When kaons decay into lighter pions, the constituent sub-particles known as quarks undergo changes brought about by weak forces that operate at such a small scale. As the quarks move away, they exchange gluons -- particles that cause the quarks to bind into the pions.
The computations are performed using the techniques of lattice quantum chromodyamics (QCD -- the theory that describes fundamental quark-gluon interactions), in which the decay is inputted into a computer as a finite grid of space-time points. The problem of calculating the decay rate can be reduced to a statistical method, called the Monte Carlo method. The present calculation extends the range of lattice QCD calculations to a new class of process, weak decays with two strongly interacting particles in the final state.
Whilst the calculation reported here has determined fundamental quantities necessary for an understanding of the matter-antimatter asymmetry, it also marks the beginning of the next phase of the collaboration's work. This will involve improving the precision of the computations and extending the range of physical quantities for which the effects of the strong nuclear force can be quantified.
Comparing experimental measurements of rare processes with the predictions of the standard model is a powerful tool to search for signatures of new physics and in discriminating between proposed theories. Lattice QCD will be a central tool in these studies, but in most cases even more computing power is required.
Dr Peter Boyle of the University of Edinburgh, who co-authored the paper, said: "Fortunately the next generation of IBM supercomputers is being installed over the next few months in many research centres around the world, including the Blue-Gene/Q at Edinburgh, part of the DiRAC (Distributed Research utilising Advanced Computing) facility of which both the Edinburgh and Southampton groups are members, as well as at ALCF, the KEK laboratory in Japan, the Brookhaven National Lab and the Riken Brookhaven Research Center (RBRC) in the US."
These new IBM BlueGene/Q machines are expected to have 10 to 20 times the performance of the current machines, Dr Boyle explains: "With this dramatic boost in computing power we can get a more accurate and complete version of the present calculation, and other important details will come within reach. This is a nice synergy between science and the computer -- the science pushing computer developments and the advanced computers pushing science forward, to the benefit of the science community and also the commercial world."

Do you need to modify your home to account for a family member?s medical condition?
Strategy: Draw up plans now for home improvements. If you qualify, you may be able to deduct a portion of the cost as a medical expense.
Beginning in 2013, the chance for a medical deduction will be reduced or even eliminated. So you should take action in 2012. ?
Here?s the whole story: To qualify as a deductible medical expense, the cost must be incurred primarily for the prevention or alleviation of a physical or mental defect or illness. For a medically necessary home improvement, the deductible medical expense equals the cost above the resulting increase in the home?s value if you own the home. The entire cost of improvements made by tenants is eligible for the deduction.
However, unreimbursed medical expenses are deductible only to the extent the annual total exceeds 7.5% of AGI. Even worse, the AGI threshold is scheduled to increase to 10% in 2013.
Example: You need to install an elevator and make other modifications in your home to accommodate a disabled individual. The improvements will cost $20,000 and an appraiser estimates it will increase your home?s value by $8,000. None of the cost is covered by your insurance. For simplicity, let?s say your annual AGI is $220,000 and you have $2,000 in other unreimbursed medical expenses for the year. ?
If you make the home improvements in 2012, you can deduct $5,500 of the cost. Reason: That?s the amount by which your unreimbursed medical expenses ($22,000) exceed 7.5% of your AGI ($16,500). However, if you wait until 2013, your deduction is zero because your expenses ($22,000) don?t exceed 10% of your AGI ($22,000).? ?
Tip: You can also deduct operating and maintenance costs for a medically necessary home improvement, subject to the AGI deduction floor.

Series Intro:
?Contemporary Black feminism is the outgrowth of countless generations of personal sacrifice, militancy and work by our mothers and sisters.?
?We have found it difficult to organize around Black feminist issues, difficult even to announce in certain contexts that we are Black feminists.?
-both quotations from the Combahee River Collective Statement, 1977
?
Can Black Feminism be quantified?
No.
I do not dream in numbers.?? I am one of those word-lovers who even disdains scrabble because I find the transmutation of words into unequal numerical values such as ?triple word score? somewhat sacrilegious.??? So when I read the title of Part III of Duchess Harris?s Black Feminist Politics from Kennedy to Obama that asks ?Can Black Feminism Be Quantified?? my knee jerked.?? No.? I said to the waiting pages.? Measure love.? Measure the universe.? Measure God.? Black Feminism cannot be quantified.
And then I realized that all of these things had already been done. ??Numbers are hiding everywhere, declared or undeclared.? Every quilt has a certain number of stitches, took a certain number of hours and days to make.?? Oppressed people travelling under night have been numbering the stars for generations.? My mother calls me a certain number of times during any given week.
What an evocative question.? Can Black Feminism be quantified??
Maybe.
IV.
Black Feminism Be(yond): Black Feminism and Abundance
At the end of the day Harris?s book is a testament to the fact the Black feminism lives.? In the most unlikely of places.? In relationship to the US government.? Somewhere the act of voting.? Even in spaces that look like absence.? The lack of accountability of every contemporary administration.? The contradictory presence of Black women in those administration.?? Black feminism is a question that will never not be worth asking.? It has sides and synthesis.? To deny it makes it even more necessary.
Kind of like us.
We are necessary even for the politicians who wish we didn?t exist.? How else but the figure of the dangerous Black woman (in the form of the welfare queen) could Reagan et. al. convince poor white people to dismantle their own safety nets? How else but the figure of the dangerous Black woman (in the form of the tenured public school teacher and the district smudging parent) could conservatives continue to convince a country in urgent need of brilliance that education should be a rare privilege???? Like the monument of Mammy that Melissa Harris-Lacewell mentions in Sister Citizen Black women are that monumental necessary underneath, that without which a whole society could not remember to hate itself and devalue the work of sustaining human life.
And what would happen to capitalism if the world remembered to love itself?
So Black feminism is as abundant as a capitalist society?s fear of magic and survival and sharing and waking up ready.?? If we are the hope and dream of the slave (yes I quoted Maya Angelou) then we are the nightmare of the logic that continues to enslave, turning life into a number of hours to work, third grade test calculations into numbers of prison beds to build, aspirations into student debt with interest, 99% percent of us into treadmill running borrowers of our own time.
Can Black feminism be quantified when the continual occasion for Black feminism is the dazzling way our lives and ingenuity defy quantification? When we were never meant to survive?
Lorde knows, this is the dangerous thing.? The instant and triumph of Black feminism.? The poetry of Black feminism?s abundant presence in the world.? Stack it up and it will always exceed the measure.?? Like we exceed a state that doesn?t want our children to live.? Like we exceed gender categories that can?t see us.? Like how even Daniel Moynihan couldn?t understand how our enduring matriarchy was not extinct.
Our Black feminism is what the Combahee River Collective calls countless.
It is a certain extension in a calf muscle that changes shoes and keeps walking.? It is a flashing look in the eye that interrupts anything.? It is new vowels? and spaces in the word ?sista.?? It is ancient depth in the center of the word ?home.?? It is recognition.? It is touch.? It is a drink of water.? It is the acrobatic orientation of our bodies to love each other in a world that names us unloveable.? It is the all of the food, all of the faith, all of the falling and getting up.? It is like the unnumbered stars that electricity tries to hide.? Black feminism is like that, so bright and surrounded in infinite Black. ?It is you who I can or cannot see from where I am. ?It is love.? It is here.? Here we are.
And Harris?s book is bravely saying that we count despite the structures? we could never count on, despite the dreams that discount us.?? That our definition-defying being is material.?? That our presence or absence matters.? That there is no state without us.? No statement without the question of Black feminism.?? Which is the same as the question of who and what can be.

Portable heaters are more often used in places where there are no central heating systems. These heaters are used to heat a single room. Different sized rooms require different types of heaters.
The various types of room heaters include the ceramic heaters, radiant heaters, oil-filled heaters, fan heaters and gas heaters. The ceramic heaters are the most effective heaters used to heat large rooms as these heaters have fans. As the ceramic heaters have advanced features which include cut-off fans and thermostats, it is considered to be safer than the other types of heaters.
The oil filled heaters are more economical. It uses the energy to heat the oil and the heated oil is used to heat the entire room. These heaters require some time to heat the entire room. The radiant heaters use a certain type of reflector to heat a certain area. It is ideally used to heat small surfaces rather than an entire room.
Electric cooker: Various types of electrical cookers are available today. Slow cookers, rice cookers, milk cookers, ovens, hot plates and toasters. Rice cookers are mainly used to cook rice. These cookers are available in different prices and sizes. It is quite easy and convenient to cook rice using rice cookers.

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian forces pounded the battered city of Homs with tank and mortar fire and troops pummeled several other rebel strongholds on Saturday, leaving at least 24 dead, opposition activists said.
With the bloodshed showing no signs of abating, the U.N.-Arab League peace envoy for Syria, Kofi Annan, flew to Moscow, seeking Russian backing for his efforts to secure a ceasefire.
Western and Arab states want Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to stand down but Russia, a long-time ally of Syria, has put the onus on the armed rebels and their foreign backers to make the first move.
In a statement ahead of Sunday's meeting between Annan and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, the Kremlin said it would be hard to enforce a halt to the violence "until external armed and political support of the opposition is terminated".
More than a year after the start of the uprising against Assad, the prospect of a negotiated peace seemed more remote than ever, with clashes reported in numerous locations.
At least 10 people were killed by explosions and sniper fire in Homs, the epicenter of the anti-Assad revolt, said activists who accused Syrian forces of shelling residential areas in the centre of the city indiscriminately.
"The shelling started like it does every morning, for no reason. They are using mortar and tank fire on many neighborhoods of old Homs," an activist in Homs's Bab Sbaa district told Reuters via Skype.
He said most residents in the area had fled to safer districts and many were trying to escape the city altogether.
The Syrian government says rebels have killed about 3,000 members of the security forces and blames the violence on "terrorist" gangs. The official Sana news agency said the bodies of 18 "army martyrs", killed in various clashes, were buried on Saturday.
REBELS UNDER FIRE
Syrian troops have repeatedly targeted Homs, Syria's third largest city, and said last month they had regained control of Baba Amr, a large neighborhood held by rebels for several months. However, a surge in violence in other neighborhoods this week suggested the army was struggling to keep control.
The Homs activist, who declined to be named for fear of reprisals, said the opposition Free Syrian Army had also not been able to reestablish its hold on parts of the city.
"The Free Syrian Army had been in Bab Sbaa when the army started shelling the area four days ago and they weren't able to block the army raids because they were getting hit by mortars at the same time that armored vehicles were coming in," he said.
"We only have a few rebels here left. There is nothing they can do," he added.
It was impossible to verify the reports independently. Syrian authorities have prevented foreign journalists and human rights workers from entering affected areas.
Further to the north, security forces killed at least five people and wounded dozens more in raids on Saraqib, which lies in Idlib province bordering Turkey, activists said.
"There are dozens of tanks and armored vehicles storming Saraqib now and there is heavy artillery fire," an activist called Manhal said via Skype.
Mortars and heavy artillery fire also hit the city of Qusair, in Homs province, killing three civilians. There were reports of overnight clashes in the city of Douma, close to the capital Damascus.
In the southern province of Deraa, birthplace of the revolt, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said a man was shot dead at a checkpoint in an area where a soldier had been gunned down. Three other soldiers were killed in an attack in the northeastern province of Hasaka, it said.
RUSSIAN COMPLAINTS
Deep divisions within opposition ranks have weakened the anti-Assad front. In a bid to tackle the problem at a military level, a senior army defector said on Saturday that all rebel groups would work under the leadership of the Free Syrian Army.
"In these critical times that our beloved Syria is passing through, it is necessary that all noble people of this nation work to unite all efforts at toppling this corrupt regime," Brigadier General Mustafa Sheikh said in a video message.
Sheikh said he would head the group's military council while FSA leader Colonel Riad al-Asaad, who was sitting alongside him, would take charge of the fighting forces.
Annan is leading international efforts to avoid any escalation and has drawn up a six-point plan, including demands for a ceasefire, the immediate withdrawal of heavy armor from residential areas and access for humanitarian assistance.
The EU and other bodies have also imposed sanctions to put pressure on Assad and his allies. The bloc added two state-owned oil companies - Syrian Petroleum Company and Mahrukat Company - to its list of organizations facing sanctions on Saturday, a day after it banned Assad's wife from travelling to the EU or shopping with European companies.
But attempts to halt the conflict have been stymied by divisions between world powers. Russia and China have vetoed two U.N. resolutions highly critical of Damascus.
Moscow and Beijing did support a Security Council resolution earlier this week endorsing Annan's mission. The former U.N. chief is due to fly to China after his Russia talks.
Moscow has accused the West of being too one-sided in the conflict, arguing that outside support for rebels is fuelling the fighting in Syria, which hosts a Russian naval base.

Whatever happened to the American dream of going to college, landing a great job and living happily ever after? College is supposed to be about getting off to a great start, but it?s a financial noose that threatens to kill our young and everybody else too. The U.S. has the dubious distinction of now having more than $1 trillion in outstanding student loan debt.
?The crisis has the full attention of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau which in a recent blog?, presented its sobering findings. ?Unlike other consumer credit products, student debt keeps growing at a steady clip. Students borrowed $117 billion in just federal student loans last year. And students continue to borrow private student loans, which lack the income-based repayment and deferment options of federal student loans. If current trends continue, there will be consequences not just for young people, but for all of us,? wrote CFPB?s student loan ombudsman Rohit Chophra.
Worse still, he writes, according to data from the Department of Education, federal student loan debt isn?t growing just with new originations ? with so many borrowers unable to keep up with interest payments, debt is growing even for many who have left school. Too much debt means too much risk for a generation of young people, many of whom are struggling in today?s economy.

A credit card that lets you earn cash or points can help cut the cost of your fill-ups. But if you want to get the best payback, you need to shop around and compare offers. Two new reports show the rewards cards offered by the big oil companies are not the way to go.?
?Don?t think you?re saving a lot by having one of those gas company credit cards,? says Odysseas Papadimitriou, CEO of comparison website CardHub.com. ?For most people, you?ll literally get almost nothing in return for giving up your flexibility.??
For example, with the Conoco card you need to buy at least 45 gallons of gas in a month to get the meager savings of 5 cents a gallon. And rewards stop after 110 gallons in any qualifying month.?
The Citgo card limits rewards to the first 90 days after opening a new account. The payback is capped at $50. After the first three months, there is no reward.?
A survey by another comparison site, NerdWallet.com, came to the same conclusion: You?d be better off with a general purpose rewards card.?
Anisha Sekar, vice president of credit and debit products at NerdWallet, analyzed cards from five major brands: BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Gulf and Shell. She found that these branded cards offer few rewards and have many gimmicks.?
?There is so much fine print,? Sekar says. ?You?ll find limits on how much you can earn a month and limits on how you can redeem what you?ve earned.??
Card Hub analyzed the major gas reward credit cards and picked these as the worst:?
Chevron and Texaco Gas Card: This card only saves you 10 cents per gallon, but at current prices that's only 2.7 percent. (You can get 3 to 5 percent on most good rewards cards.) Savings are capped at $300 per year. You stop earning rewards after the first 60 days.?
Shell Platinum MasterCard: Savings with this card are variable. If you spend less than $500 per month, you get absolutely nothing. Spend $500 to $999.99 in one month and you save 10 cents a gallon off the Shell gasoline you buy the next month.?
Do oil company gas cards make sense for anyone? Card Hub?s Papadimitriou says these cards are for people with damaged or limited credit who want to be able to pull up for a fill-up and not have to pay in cash. For everyone else, he says, a generic rewards credit card that can be used at any station makes more sense.?
What are the best reward gas credit cards right now?? I contacted four websites that specialize in credit card comparisons -- CardHub.com, LowCards.com, Credit.com and NerdWallet.com -- and asked for their top picks for gas cards. Three cards got the most recommendations.
Chase Freedom Visa: It pays 5 percent cash back on up to $1,500 of gasoline purchases in the first and third quarters. The rest of the year the gas reward drops to 1 percent. This card offers a $200 cash bonus if you spend $500 in the first three months. No annual fee.
American Express Blue Cash Everyday Card: You get 2 percent back on gasoline, 3 percent on grocery and department store purchases and 1 percent on everything else. Spend $1,000 in the first three months of receiving the card and you get a $100 cash back bonus. No annual fee.
Pentagon Federal Credit Union Platinum Rewards Credit Card: With this PenFed Visa card you earn points that you convert to cash (in the form of a Visa prepaid card), merchandise or travel. The points work out to 5 percent for gas, 3 percent for groceries and 1 percent for everything else. And there?s a bonus: You get 5,000 points after your first purchase and 20,000 points if you spend $1,000 in the first three months of having the card. There is no annual fee. You don't need to be in the military or work for the government. Anyone who joins the National Military Family Association ($15 one-time fee) or Voices for America's Troops ($20 one-time fee) can get the card.
A few cautions Before you apply for any credit card, take the time to read all the terms and conditions. Be sure you know how the cash-back offer works and look for any restrictions. These pitfalls include:
Spending categories that rotate each quarter. That 5 percent reward on gasoline purchases could be limited to certain times of the year. And you may have to go online to sign up for that higher reward every quarter.
Spending tiers that must be reached in order to qualify for the maximum cash-back reward.
Limits on how much you can earn in a quarter or a year.
Rewards credit cards have some of the highest interest rates. So they are only for people who pay off their bill on time each and every month. If you miss even one month, you?ll lose money.?
"The interest charges are going to outweigh whatever you would have earned on the reward,? notes Greg McBride, senior financial analyst at Bankrate.com. ?Instead focus on cards that have the lowest possible interest rate.?
You can compare these cards at sites such as: CardHub.com, LowCards.com, Credit.com, NerdWallet.com and Bankrate.com.
Mark your calendars, Canadian fans. The UFC announced today they will visit the home and native land of welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre three times in the remainder of 2012.
They will start in Calgary on July 21, where Jose Aldo will fight a yet-to-be-named fighter. After that, it's UFC 152 in Toronto Sept. 22, and UFC 154 in Montreal Nov. 17. St. Pierre, who was present at the press conference, announced the Montreal date.
"When you get an injury like I have and you're off for a long period of time, the only thing you wish is to get back fast as possible," he said. "I don't know if it will be in the U.S. or Canada, but I wish and I pray that I have a chance to perform in 2012. No matter where it will be, I want to come back and fight in 2012."
St. Pierre is a native of Montreal, and has enjoyed great success when fighting in front of the rabid home crowd Canada can provide. His last two fights were won in Canada, and he exacted revenge on Matt Serra, one of the few men to beat him, in Montreal.
Though he isn't likely to rush his recovery from an ACL tear, he also has plenty of motivation to be ready to go on Nov. 17.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? The messages were flying in the Kansas locker room at halftime.
Elijah Johnson told his team to stop second-guessing itself. Tyshawn Taylor reminded the Jayhawks that they'd been in trouble before. Coach Bill Self finally stood up and told his team that it would take sheer toughness to rally past Purdue.
"When things don't go well and you get behind and you play uphill the whole way, it takes some energy and it takes some toughness," said Self, whose team fell behind by double-digits early and still trailed by six at the break. "My message to the whole team was trust each other."
All those messages came through loud and clear.
Johnson finished with 18 points, including the go-ahead basket in the final minute, and No. 2 seed Kansas held off Robbie Hummel and the No. 10 seed Boilermakers 63-60 on Sunday night in a dramatic third-round game in the NCAA tournament.
"I felt it would come down to one possession no matter what," Johnson said, "the whole time."
Purdue was clinging to a 60-59 lead and had the ball and under a minute remaining when Lewis Jackson, the shot clock winding down, lost control at the top of the key. Johnson picked it up and went the other way for the go-ahead lay-in with 23.3 seconds left.
Hummel missed an open 3-pointer at the other end and Taylor scored a transition dunk for the Jayhawks with 2.5 seconds left, giving the roughly 15,000 fans who had made the three-hour drive from the Kansas campus reason to let out a roar for one of the first times all night.
After a timeout, Purdue sharpshooter Ryne Smith managed to get off a decent look at a long, potential tying 3-pointer. It hit off the backboard, clanked off the rim and finally fell away.
The Jayhawks leaped in jubilation. The Boilermakers sank in defeat.
"It stinks," Purdue coach Matt Painter said. "It stinks to lose."
Thomas Robinson fought through double-teams all night for 11 points and 13 rebounds, and the Jayhawks (29-6) got enough production from everyone else to erase a 10-point second-half deficit and reach the Midwest Regional semifinals in St. Louis.
Kansas will face No. 11 seed North Carolina State.
"What a great game. It wasn't the best played, but it was a grind-it-out, typical Big Ten game," Self said. "Hummel was unbelievable and we just hung in there."
Hummel finished with 26 points and nine rebounds for the Boilermakers (22-13), who were trying to reach the round of 16 for the third time in four years. D.J. Byrd and Terone Johnson finished with 10 points each for Purdue.
The Jayhawks' biggest lead all night was their final one. They overcame a ragged night from Robinson by getting 10 points from Taylor and 10 more from Travis Releford.
"That isn't a team loaded with just four or five guys," Painter said.
Purdue couldn't have gotten off to a much better start, and neither could Hummel, who hit three 3-pointers while making his first four shots. The senior forward, who has come back from two torn ACLs in his right knee, even followed his first miss with a basket to make it 19-8.
He proved too quick for Robinson to guard and too strong for Kevin Young as the Jayhawks kept searching for anybody who could put a body on him ? they even tried seldom-used Justin Wesley.
The miserable start by Kansas was enough for Self to scream at his team during one defensive trip down floor, "You told me you were ready!"
Hardly seemed to be the case.
Kansas opened the game by missing 15 of its first 17 shots and all seven of its 3-point tries, compounding lousy offense by getting into foul trouble. Taylor, Young and Releford all sat stretches in the first half after picking up two early fouls.
The Jayhawks finally trimmed the lead to 31-30 with under 3 minutes left in the first half, but Lewis Jackson got inside for a basket, and Hummel managed to swish a closely guarded 3 from about 30 feet as the shot clock wound down to make it 36-30 at the break.
Hummel had 22 points on 7-of-8 shooting in the first half, while the Jayhawks' trio of stars ? Robinson, Taylor and Johnson ? managed 12 points on a combined 4 for 18.
"I wanted to come out and be aggressive, especially the first half. It seemed like everything I was taking was going in," Hummel said. "It was a crazy feeling you have as a player."
Purdue extended the lead to 42-32 early in the second half, even after Kansas employed a zone defense to slow down Hummel. Johnson led the charge on offense, and the Boilermakers kept locking down Robinson in the post, frustrating the player of the year candidate to no end.
Kansas never went on its patented run, instead slowly clawing back into the game.
The Jayhawks trimmed the lead to 47-44 midway through the second half, but came up empty with four open shots on offense. They got within 52-49 minutes later only for Taylor to turn the ball over. And it was 52-51 with 5? minutes left when Hummel drove for a layup high off the glass.
Kansas never led until Johnson hit a deep 3-pointer with just over 3 minutes left to make it 57-56. Terone Johnson answered with back-to-back baskets for Purdue to regain a 60-57 lead, but Taylor's alley-oop jam off a feed from Elijah Johnson made it a one-point game.
And set up a dramatic final flurry between Kansas and Purdue.
"We just kept grinding and grinding," Taylor said, "and we ended up making some big plays down the stretch."
Record-breaking grant: New research project to investigate the causes of mental disordersPublic release date: 19-Mar-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]
Contact: Kirsten Olesen kol@sun.au.dk (45) 23-38-24-44 Aarhus University
Causes for mental disorders will now be thoroughly investigated; more than 16.2 million euros -- the largest grant ever awarded to a Danish research team in this field -- will support Danish researchers in their pursuit of understanding mental disorders
Is it possible to prevent the development of schizophrenia? Can certain patients develop autism if they carry a specific gene and have been exposed to a viral fetal infection? Should all ADHD patients take the same type of medication?
This unique research project will try to answer these questions. The project is based at Aarhus University and will be known as 'The Lundbeck Foundation's Initiative for Integrative Psychiatric Research' (iPSYCH). The grant of DKK 121m from the Lundbeck Foundation is the largest grant ever awarded to Danish psychiatric research.
- We will investigate why some people develop mental disorders. We will identify biological disease mechanisms, and we also intend to provide the basis for better treatment and prevention, says Dr. Brglum, Professor of Medical Genetics at Aarhus University and Scientific Director of the research project.
The many faces of psychiatry
The project will study five specific mental disorders: schizophrenia, manic depression, depression, autism and ADHD. All disorders are associated with major human and societal costs all over the world. The new thing is that researchers will study these disorders from many different angles, ranging from genes and cells to population studies, from fetus to adult, from cause to symptoms of the disorder, and this knowledge will be combined in new ways across scientific fields.
- People suffering from a mental disorder such as schizophrenia may have very different lives: a family life with children and a job or a life characterized by chronic disease and homelessness. The disorders do not affect all patients in exactly the same way. We do not know why, but we do know that our current treatment methods are far from optimal because we need more knowledge about the causes behind the disorders, but also about the differences in the development, says Dr. Brglum.
- Our main goal is to identify the causes of these disorders by studying the interplay between genetic and environmental factors and thereby find new targets for treatment. The perspective is to offer better and individualized treatment, providing a better life for each individual patient with the disorder and perhaps even ways to prevent the development of the disorder in some cases, he says.
Professor Mikael Rrth, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Lundbeck Foundation, is pleased with the research opportunities that the new grant will offer:
- Mental disorders are determined by a combination of genetic and psycho-social factors. The research project will combine unique Danish registers and biobanks and is expected to pave the way for better treatment in the future, says Dr. Rrth.
International collaboration
iPSYCH consists of leading researchers within psychiatry, genetics and register-based research. The team collaborates with e.g. the SSI (Statens Serum Institut) under the Danish Ministry of Health, Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI), deCode Genetics in Iceland and the Genetic Biobank of the Faroe Islands. In combination, this will provide unique opportunities for creating ground breaking new knowledge, which may result in better and more individualized treatment of patients by considering genetic profile, environmental factors and clinical symptoms in combination.
