ATLANTA --?
No. 17 Florida State 85, No. 4 North Carolina 82: Michael Snaer scored 18 points and Florida State held on to beat North Carolina, 85-82 on Sunday, for its first-ever ACC tournament championship after P.J. Hairston's game tying 3-point attempt hit off the back of the rim at the buzzer for North Carolina.
Deividas Dulkys added 16 points for the third-seeded Seminoles (24-9), who led throughout the second half but had to sweat out the final minutes after nearly letting a 14-point advantage slip away. Florida State is the first team to beat both Duke and North Carolina twice in the same season since Georgia Tech did it in 1995-96.
Harrison Barnes scored 23 points and Tyler Zeller added 19 points and 12 rebounds for top-seeded North Carolina (29-5). The Tar Heels, who were seeking their 18th ACC tournament title, didn't go quietly. Kendall Marshall's 3-pointer cut the lead to 83-82 with 30 seconds left. But after Dulkys hit a pair of free throws, Hairston's 27-foot 3-pointer clanged off the rim as the buzzer sounded and the Seminoles rejoiced.
The Tar Heels were without John Henson (wrist), the two-time ACC defensive player of the year, for a second straight game and Florida State took full advantage of his absence. The Seminoles shot 62 percent (20 of 32) in the first half, including seven-of-13 from 3-point range, en route to a 49-40 lead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: North Carolina finished the regular season fourth in the nation in assists (17.6), but had just five in the first half? Florida State's bench outscored the Tar Heels' reserves 16-1 in the first half. REUTERS Reut15:40 03-11-12
