Ohio University guard D.J. Cooper started an elite club Tuesday. He became the first player in NCAA history to amass 2,000 points, 900 assists, 600 rebounds and 300 steals in a career.
Cooper, a senior, entered the Bobcats' game against Buffalo needing only six points to crack 2,000. He finished with 24, and added five assists, two steals and two rebounds in Ohio?s 72-69 victory.
Cooper, a guard listed a six-foot, credited former Ohio coach John Groce with his development.
"Coach (John) Groce did a great job of helping my development get better and getting me more discipline and bringing my practice habits through game time," Cooper told CBSSports.com on Tuesday. "I know it's a big mark to have my name as the only person to hit those numbers. I can't say it's sunk in right now. Maybe year or two down the road when I'm looking back at my career in Ohio. I'm blessed."
Cooper also hit 5 of 10 3-pointers to become the all-time leader in three-pointers at Ohio with 264 for the Bobcats (22-8, 13-2 Mid-American Conference), breaking a tie with Tommy Freeman (2008-11)
Cooper was an important part of last year?s Ohio team that reached the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 before losing in overtime to North Carolina. Ohio knocked off Michigan and South Florida to reach the Midwest Regional semifinals.
Groce left for Illinois after last season's Sweet 16 run. Jim Christian is in his first season as the head coach of the Bobcats.
This season, Ohio is 22-8 overall, 13-2 in Mid-American Conference play.
