Android Jelly Bean 4.1 Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S factory images released

Being part of the Android reference device family has many perks. Besides being the first to receive the latest updates, Google also provides factory images for users to download. These factory images are used to return phones or tablets back to out-of-box or factory condition if the need should ever arise. The Nexus S (soju and sojua) and the Galaxy Nexus (yakju an takju) have joined the ranks of the Nexus 7 (nakasi) getting their factory images posted online by Google.

The average user won?t find these all too useful. However, if you?re into rooting, ?flashing various custom ROMs or kernels, you can now sleep a little bit easier at night knowing you can always go back to stock in an emergency. If for some odd reason you have not received your official OTA update, these images can also be used to upgrade to Android Jelly Bean 4.1.1. To download the factory images, just head on over to the official factory images for Nexus devices download page.

Sadly, the Nexus S 4G as well as the Sprint and Verizon Wireless variants of the Galaxy Nexus are still waiting to to be upgraded to Jelly Bean. There has been no word from Google nor their respective carriers on when they can expect to?receive?their?official?Jelly Bean?update. Normally, the CDMA Nexus devices compared to their GSM counterparts take a bit longer to receive their updates due to having different radios. Keep your fingers crossed for timely updates.

Things to Do to Explore the Culture of a City

When traveling, finding things to do that do more than just fill your time is most important. It doesn?t matter if you are travelling with kids or other adults; consider how you can learn about a city and its people. Sometimes, learning what to do and where to go means finding out the locals? habits. Thankfully, most areas are happy to share their past, and their current lifestyle with travelers.

Exploring Museums of History

One way to learn about a city and its people is to visit a museum of history. Many areas offer them, and they are a great way to soak up some local culture. When planning the things to do in the area, you can find out what types of museums are available, and if they offer any type of tour. Many small or local community museums may have been historic homes or a portion of the library. The key is to learn about the history of the area.

Chamber of Commerce

If you are visiting a small town to see family and friends, why not learn more about it? One way to do this is to visit the Chamber of Commerce. In many areas, these organizations provide a wealth of information about what is available to do in the area, as well as the businesses located within the city or region. In some cases, you can learn a great deal about the city?s festivals and events, too.

Cultural Outings

What really defines the culture of an area? It is usually the performing arts and entertainment venues in that region. Be sure to find the local performing arts centers, including those in community organizations and area colleges. Attend a few events. This includes theater productions, concerts, and short-films. You may also want to spend some time at art museums, gardens, and nature centers.

Add Some Fun

Take a trip to the beach, but learn about local groups that work to maintain the natural ecosystem. Go on a trek into the dense forests nearby. Learn about the amusement parks, but instead of just doing the same old thing, try something new and find out if you can get a tour of the grounds. If there are sporting events taking place, see if you can meet the team.

Sometimes, doing more than just the tourist trends can help you to explore a city and its people in a more profound manner. These things to do are just a start of the fun you can have. You can do this in any city you visit, big or small. Play tourist in your own city sometimes, too, and you may be surprised at the new and interesting things you can find.

There are so many things to do in nj. Visit?http://www.gocentraljersey.com to find out more.

Five Human Resource Metrics that link People to Business Strategy ...

CEOs are looking for a more comprehensive understanding of talent today and their needs for tomorrow, but aren?t getting information on talent? this was a key finding in PwC?s 15th Annual Global CEO Survey, ?Delivering results: Growth and value in a volatile world?, which seeks to understand how businesses are preparing for growth in their priority markets (http://www.pwc.com/gx/en/ceo-survey/key-findings/hr-talent-strategies.jhtml ). Clearly the standard HR metrics of Cost per resource, HR efficiency (no. of HR employees to total no. of employees), etc. which primarily help in driving down the costs are no longer sufficient in an environment where talent is the competitive edge for organizations. The need of the hour is HR metrics that are aligned to the current and the future business plans to ensure that not only is there no shortage of talent when we need it but also that we have processes and programs in place to create the right talent for our business.?

When we create budgets for the year, we spend a significant amount of time planning where the revenue will come from and how the spend will be distributed across cost headers. In services organization, labour is the biggest component of both income and expenditure. Do we spend the same amount of time in planning how we would attract, retain and develop this big-ticket item so that the business objectives are met? Annual talent strategy planning is a must to develop and harness the potential of human capital ? to proactively drive business outcomes instead of reactively responding to whatever the latest talent shortage crisis is. Based on my experiences in resource management and operations, here are the five human resource related metrics that I think can help link your people strategy to your business strategy:

Human Resource Metric #1: Competency Development Spend % - This one starts with identifying the key skills and talents that are necessary to execute on the company?s strategy for the year and create the competitive advantage while providing a platform for internal employees to learn and grow in their chosen career ladders. These could be technical (specialized software or hardware skills), functional (customer service, selling, tools and technology training) or managerial (leadership development, communication, succession planning, mentoring). Assess the current skill levels and the gap from where it needs to be and then draw up the competency development plan with budgets, timelines and desired outcomes for the year. Monitor the spend against the budget periodically (maybe monthly or quarterly) to ensure that there is focus on developing the right competencies that are needed for business success and that the plan is relevant to the current business scenarios.

Human Resource Metric #2: Employee Engagement ? This is the HR Mantra and enough research has been done to show that the EE figures of an organization are directly proportional to its business performance. Falling engagement levels are the precursor to higher attrition, lower productivity and increasing costs per hire. But an employee engagement survey just for the sake of measuring engagement is a waste of time and energy. The survey should be used as a tool to collect information that helps drive better results. Analysis should be done to isolate sincere actionable feedback from the ?noise?. For example ? what do your best performers think about your organization ? does it allow them to perform to their optimum levels and get better every day? Invest and prioritize the engagement feedback that will really have an impact on key employee retention and overall employee performance and build this into your annual plan.

Human Resource Metric #3: Quality of Hiring - This amounts to determining how a new hire?s abilities and performance varies from pre-hire requirements and expectations and is a metric that is generally calculated from 3-6 months after the hiring. Combined with the cost of hire (external recruitment spend+ internal labor costs) and the speed of hire (time taken to fulfill an open position), the quality of hire metric forms a great basis to measure the overall efficiency of your recruitment function and its processes (targeted sourcing, ?speedy reaction time, consistent screening process and continuous improvement). The impact of a wrong hire is huge on the business outcome and we definitely need to spend some time here to ensure we have the right data points and methodologies to ensure that we hire the right people for the right jobs. Some excellent data on this metric here : http://www.ere.net/2009/10/02/quality-of-hire-the-missing-link-in-calculating-roi-part-i-of-a-series/

Human Resource Metric #4: Resource Utilization % - This is the most common metric used in human resource management and for a good reason. It is the ratio of the?resource?s billable work to the total amount of work and hence has a visible and direct impact on a company?s revenue and margins. What I want to highlight here is the need to go beyond this number and look at the underlying reasons for variations in the numbers and focus on them for improvement. ?Numerous factors can change utilization rates, including inconsistency in calculations of what constitutes work and billable work, late and cancelled projects, increased training and ramp ?up times and ancillary job demands, such as paperwork. Keep track of employee expertise areas and availability status in a central skill database, so that you can the quickly move people into a project and maximize utilization. Cross-train technical staff to respond quickly to changes in client demand. Developing a versatile and flexible workforce keeping in mind future customer requirements reduces idle time. Develop a bench strategy and a robust demand and supply forecasting process to stay on top of the target utilization numbers.

Human Resource Metric #5: Revenue per Employee ? This is a simple metric but the most important one to gauge and measure the success of all the plans and initiatives as outlined above ? quarter on quarter and year on year. It also helps to compare the performance of your organization with similar organizations and set benchmarks internally for your HR and resource management functions, the data on total revenue and total headcount of companies being easily available. The revenue per employee should steadily increase leading to expanding margins and improved profitability. This is a number that must feature on all management reviews as it helps keep focus not only on the denominator (costs ? and there is only so much cutting that you can do) but also on the numerator (revenue ? where are we getting maximum value out of our labour and why ? to drive strategy in the directions where it is working).

One size definitely does not fit all when it comes to metrics ?- and you may have your own views on what metrics are best suited to drive the talent advantage for your organization. One thing is common though ? we need to collect consistent information on our resources, use metrics that enable decision-making and ensure that talent management strategy remains relevant with overall business strategy and contributes actively to business growth. We need to choose the metrics that help the management to make quick and sound business decisions that are based on facts rather than feeling. What has worked for you in this area ? I would love to hear and learn from you.

Kyocera DuraXT (Sprint)

The Kyocera DuraXT ($69.99) is Sprint's replacement for the Kyocera DuraMax (3 stars). It has a bigger, better speaker, but is otherwise pretty much the same rugged flip-style?cell phone. It's super tough, uses Sprint's relatively new Direct Connect service, and has a loud speaker and great battery life. A dated UI and few features mean it's only average otherwise, but if you need a push-to-talk feature phone, the DuraXT is your best bet.

Design, Call Quality, and Direct Connect
Like Sprint's other push-to-talk phones, the DuraXT is built like a big old brick. It measures 4 by 2.1 by 1.1 inches (HWD) when closed, and is covered in a grippy, scratch-resistant, rubberized casing. It's also a bit heavy, at 5.3 ounces. It feels tough, and that's for good reason. The DuraXT meets military specification 810G, so it's resistant to dust, extreme temperatures, low pressure, rain, salt fog, shock, and vibration, among other rough conditions. It can even be submerged in three feet of standing water for 30 minutes. It survived plenty of drops of drops to the floor of the PCMag Labs with nary a scratch. On one drop the door that covers the charging port came open, but nothing was damaged. We also placed the phone in a bucket of water, where it was still able to receive calls and snap photos.

There's a 1-inch, monochrome 96-by-64-pixel external display that shows battery life, reception, and time. The internal 320-by-240-pixel LCD looks surprisingly sharp. The default font size is a bit small, but you can make it larger. The phone's keypad is great; it features large, raised keys with plenty of space in between, which should make it possible to dial while wearing gloves.

The DuraXT is a dual-band EV-DO Rev. A (850/1900 MHz) device with no Wi-Fi.?Reception is average and voice quality is good overall. Earpiece volume goes very loud, and voices sound clear, if a bit thin. Calls made with the phone also sound natural, with good noise cancellation. Calls sounded good through a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars) and the Nuance-powered voice dialing worked well. Battery life was great at 8 hours and 12 minutes of talk time.

Back when we reviewed the DuraMax, our biggest issue was that the speaker volume wasn't as loud as we would've liked it to be. After all, a push-to-talk phone should be built to hear outside in a noisy environment. While the DuraXT's speaker isn't quite deafening, it is certainly louder than the DuraMax. It's loud enough to hear on a busy city street, so it should be loud enough to hear over most reasonable construction noise.

Sprint's Direct Connect service combines the 3G Internet speeds and nationwide coverage of Sprint's CDMA network with the instantaneous push-to-talk of the old Nextel iDEN network. You need to be in a Sprint coverage area in order to use the DuraXT, but you can still make push-to-talk calls to Nextel iDEN subscribers.?The new network supports Call Alert With Text, which sends an audio alert and text message to another subscriber, along with Group Connect, which can connect 20 subscribers together at once. You can also use the Direct Connect button to mass-message up to 200 Direct Connect subscribers in one shot, or to send recorded messages to email addresses or handsets via text message.?

For this review, I tested Direct Connect using two different DuraXTs. It takes about a second to initiate the connection, after which transmissions are essentially instantaneous. Voice quality is solid, and like the speakerphone, volume is suitably loud.

Apps, Multimedia, and Conclusions
Like the rest of Sprint's push-to-talk lineup, the DuraXT is an otherwise bare bones feature phone. The main menu features the same grid with 12 icons that Sprint has used on many flip phones in the past. It's dated, and requires many button presses to perform even the simplest tasks.

There's an Access NetFront 4.1 browser for reading WAP pages; desktop HTML is out. The DuraXT also supports Sprint Navigation for voice-enabled, turn-by-turn directions, as well as Sprint Family Locator. You also get the standard apps like an alarm, calculator, and calendar.

There's no music or video player, so the nonstandard 2.5mm headphone jack on the right side of the phone isn't a big issue. You get 64MB of free internal memory, along with a 2GB microSD card installed in the slot underneath the battery. You probably won't need anything larger than this, though my 32 and 64GB SanDisk cards worked fine as well.

The 3.2-megapixel camera includes an LED flash, but no auto-focus. It snaps photos in about 0.5 second, but then takes a good 2 seconds to save them. Test photos look decent, if a little dark, with acceptable color and detail. Videos, on the other hand, are terrible. They max out at a miniscule 176-by-144-pixels and play back at a stuttering 10 frames per second indoors and 15 frames per second outside.

If you're looking for a push-to-talk feature phone on Sprint, the Kyocera DuraXT is your best bet. The Kyocera DuraCore ($49.99, 3 stars) costs $20 less, but it isn't as rugged and lacks a camera. The Kyocera DuraPlus?($69.99, 3 stars) is a slab-style phone that's just as rugged as the DuraXT, but it's a 6.7-ounce beast that also lacks a camera. If you're interested in something more advanced, the?Motorola Admiral?($99.99, 4 stars) is a ruggedized push-to-talk Android smartphone with plenty of excellent multimedia features, as well as access to more than 400,000 apps in the Android Market.?

Gov't: Great Recession bit less weak than thought

(AP) ? Here's a small consolation: The Great Recession wasn't quite as horrendous as previously thought.

But it was still pretty horrendous: Updated government estimates from January 2009 through December 2011 show that the downturn remains by far the worst recession since the Great Depression.

And growth since the recession officially ended in June 2009 has been slightly less than previous estimates. That's a reminder of how weak the recovery has been.

The revisions were released Friday by the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis with its report on April-June growth. Each year in July, the bureau revises the previous three years of data on the nation's gross domestic product, the broadest measure of the economy.

The changes show the economy shrank 4.7 percent from the start of the recession in December 2007 until it ended three years ago. That's 0.4 percentage point less than the previous estimate of 5.1 percent.

The main reason for the revision: State and local governments spent more in 2009 than initially thought.

Still, only two previous recessions suffered contractions greater than 3 percent. One was in 1957, the other in 1973.

Since the Great Recession ended, growth has been modest at best. From July 2009 through the end of 2011, the economy grew a total of 5.8 percent. That's down from an earlier measure of 6.2 percent.

The economy grew at an average annual rate of 0.3 percent from 2008 through 2011, the government said. That's down from an earlier measure of 0.4 percent.

Some quarters were revised significantly. The government says the economy grew at an annual rate of 4.1 percent in last year's fourth quarter, up from a previous estimate of only 3 percent. That was because companies added more to their stockpiles, and governments spent more.

And the first and second quarters of 2010 were revised down sharply, from nearly 4 percent each to 2.3 percent and 2.2 percent, respectively. That reflected much less investment in business equipment and software.

The revisions are based on more complete data from a range of sources, including annual Census surveys of retailers and manufacturers and IRS tax records. The IRS data is made available only after a two-year lag. The Census data are also delayed.

Here are the changes the Commerce Department made to the past 12 quarters:

Five Sparrows Marketing Blog - Don't Build Your Business on ...

With all the amazing ?free? marketing channels available to small businesses today, it?s easier than ever to set up social profiles, engage with customers, and run marketing campaigns across all types of social media ? like Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter, and Pinterest.? However, there?s one thing that many small businesses tend to forget ? all of these ?free? social media sites are built on platforms that are owned and controlled by others.?

For instance, if your small business has invested lots of time, design work, and/or customization on your Facebook Page, you could see these efforts wiped out the next time Facebook decides to change its page layout, its publishing guidelines, its features, or any number of other variables over which you have no control.

A few weeks ago, there was an email going around encouraging Facebook users to post a ?copyright disclaimer? on their Facebook pages.? It concluded that if users posted this disclaimer on their Facebook pages, it would legally protect them from unauthorized use of their information.

Of course, this turned out to be a hoax.? The fact is that the information published in your Facebook profile belongs to Facebook.? Whatever information you added to your Facebook page was information that you voluntarily uploaded to a public platform ? you no longer have control of how that information is used, copyright disclaimer or not.

So how do you protect your small business from online changes that are beyond your control?? Simple ? focus on your website, the online entity that you OWN.

By making your small business website the ?hub? of all your online marketing initiatives, you can use as many external marketing channels as you like, as long as they all lead back to your website ? the web destination that you own and can completely control.?

Consider this diagram:

In a healthy small business marketing mix, you can see the website is at the center of it all.? The other online channels feed into and out of the website, but if any of your social networking channels were to go away, the website would still be there providing critical business and marketing information for users, regardless of what happens externally.

That?s not to say that external marketing channels aren?t important ? they are very important.? Businesses can benefit hugely from taking advantage of social media and other free platforms that provide extra visibility and engagement with customers. ?But putting too much of your time, effort, and marketing dollars into a social site that you don?t own or control can be risky.? Instead, consider an integrated, website-centric approach:

 • Use your blog (self-hosted on your domain) to post social information, then auto-publish those posts to your external social sites (Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
 • Make sure your social profiles link to your website, and vice versa.
 • Use campaign-specific landing pages on your website for e-marketing and social initiatives.
 • Integrate all online channels so that a consistent message is delivered regardless of the user?s device, and include plenty of links back to your website.

By keeping your website at the center of your online marketing hub, you can easily manage and control the flow of information to any number of external channels. ?Of course, these external channels will continue to change and evolve, or may disappear completely.? Make sure you have built your marketing foundation on property that you own ? your small business website ? and not on a borrowed platform over which you have little or no control.

Personal Productivity: 3 Time Allocation Tools For The Mission ...

When it comes down to personal productivity, handling your time and energy well is a real concern. Yet, for social and mission-driven entrepreneurs like you, the ?hard-core? discipline of a Stephen Covey 1-2-3 planning system may not work. For you, creative flow, creating new ideas, being spontaneous must be of the same importance as checking off your-to-do list.

In this article, I?ll teach a bit more of a creative, intuitive process that may keep you energized and galvanized for the long run.

First, we?ll address what resource management really means. It implies that:

a) you've got to change your calendar from a slave driver to your no.1 reason keeper
b) that you will need to focus on what?s most determined for you the leader.

To form a calendar that let?s you get tons done which helps you breathe inspiration, the way to do that's by creating different categories on your calendar (I love doing that with Google calendar and then share each one of them with my office manager so she will take on my scheduling).

Here is a list of items that I would recommend you add to your calendar. By the way, I add them at a rather random time and add the word [Floater] to the task. This way I'm aware That I have some time planned for them but I will move them around to accommodate other engagements since they aren't time-dependent:

1. Creative time bites

These are weekly or even twice weekly time slots of several hours that are open to be used as you think fit. Just scheduling this, will give you a feeling of liberty and creative surge, I promise.

2. Email time slots

One of the largest wastes of our generation is answering electronic messages twenty four seven as quickly as they come in. Here's what I?d recommend: Create 2 half-hour slots and one 1-hour slot. Use the half hour slots to go thru your email, answer? really quick? ones immediately and place the ?task-heavy? ones into a ?to-do? folder. Now you have masses of time on your 1-hour slot to work down the mails that mean you have to perform a job. Result: at the day's close, your mail is empty.

3. Break slots

Yes, for entrepreneurs who depend on their intuitive decision-making process, you want regular breaks to recharge and reconnect . The illusion that you do not have time for breaks (which you share with many others ), is the most important reason why we think we are productive when we?re just truly, only busy.

Ok, I could go on except for now, just add those 3 ?floaters? to your day and week, and exult in the confidence, increased creativity and smoother work flow you gain from it .

Now to concentrating on what?s really vital for you. Yes, you are at a place now where you don't have to do all the tasks yourself any longer. You've a team to support your business expansion, yet, on occasions you find yourself still executing on jobs that may be done by somebody on your team.

The solution: Every Sunday evening, prepare your calendar for the week. Create your ?floaters? and then judge all of your others tasks on your job list. Make sure that ONLY you can work on them. Be rigorous. If you know you could train someone else, discipline yourself to do that. Yes, it may cost a bit more time at this time but then you don't ever have to do it again. Your skills are unique, identify the ones that bring ideas, impact and income to your business, delegate everything else.

In the week, you will find that you will get tempted to put out fires that come to you from all angles. Again, stop, breath, ask if it is most purposeful for you to become involved in that activity. If not, either delegate now or create a task in your project-management tool which will remind you to train somebody next time. You owe it to the planet , your team and you to be thorough with your purpose.

Iran offers "unchangeable" support for Syria

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran said on Thursday it would stand by its ally Syria despite mounting international pressure on President Bashar al-Assad to step down to defuse a 16-month uprising against his rule.

Iran's Press TV quoted first Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi as saying Tehran's support for Syria was "unchangeable", countering suggestions that Tehran could soften its backing for Assad, the Shi'ite Muslim republic's closest Arab ally.

"The Iranian people have an unchangeable stance on Syrians and will always stand by them," Rahimi was quoted as saying, accusing major powers of uniting to damage the Syrian nation.

The secretary of Iran's National Security Council, Saeed Jalili, said on Thursday Tehran was ready to support Damascus "more than before in the face of foreign pressure", the official IRNA news agency reported.

Despite lauding popular uprisings in other Arab countries as an "Islamic awakening", Iran has dismissed opposition to Assad's rule as a foreign conspiracy.

A statement earlier this month by Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi that Tehran was ready to host talks between the Syrian government and opposition groups had suggested a possible policy shift.

In a concrete sign of support for the Syrian authorities, a delegation of Syrian ministers was received in Tehran on Thursday and the two sides agreed a deal on importing Iranian electricity via Iraq.

"We agreed with Iran that in one month agreements be made with Iraq so that, putting problems to one side, electricity imports from Iran begin," the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) quoted Imad Khamis, Syria's electricity minister, as saying.

"Iran will not leave Syria alone in difficult times," Iranian Energy Minister Majid Namjou was quoted as saying by ILNA news agency, adding Tehran was ready to reconstruct facilities damaged in Syria during the uprising.

Iraq's Shi'ite Muslim-led government, which is close Iran, has called for reform in Syria - whose leadership belongs to the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam - rather than an end to Assad's 12-year-old rule.

Lady Gaga, Label, Sued By Bratz Doll Makers For $10 Million

Toy maker claims that Gaga and her management have delayed approval of a Mother Monster doll.

Capital Outlook ? Akinyemi, EDC seek to place local businesses in ...

By Kanya Stewart

Associate Editor

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), small and home-based business owners experiencing growth or considering expansion can achieve some profitable gains from relocating their businesses to commercial property. The SBA cites that moving into a retail relocation can provide the attraction of additional customers as a result of more visibility and traffic, and help increase professional and community interaction. These cited benefits are also advantages that Leon County?s new vacant property re-use program intends to provide to area business owners.

The re-use program is the brainchild of Leon County Commissioner Akin Akinyemi and the Economic Development Council (EDC).

After performing a survey to find ways to improve the economy in Leon County, Akinyemi?s office, along with an ad-hoc committee of community representatives from various sectors, discovered that there are at least 250 buildings in Leon County that can provide more than 1.5 million square feet of unused office space to local business owners and non-profit organizations.

Examples of the caliber of proposed office space available through the program include:? the former Saturn dealership, located at 2412 W. Tennessee St. and 3019 Jackson Bluff Rd., an address once used by the Department of Children and Families.

?The reason why I am promoting this in particular is I am an architect; I am in construction,? Akinyemi said, adding that several businesses and non-profits have already shown interest in the program. ?I know how much the industry has suffered and I know how much of an eye sore or blight (vacant property) can create. It is a win-win. It can create jobs, improve the environment and make things better overall.?

Akinyemi said that the re-use program is just one part of a larger-scale plan to boost the local economy. Other initiatives that Akinyemi, the County and EDC are actively involved in include: bringing more manufacturers to the area through such entities as Innovation Park, projects to help encourage the county to be more technology-driven when it comes to business and? programs to develop and utilize the talents of young people in the area.

To assist existing and new business owners with taking advantage of the un-used space, Akinyemi and the EDC, along with organizations such as the Tallahassee Board of Realtors, the Capital City Chamber of Commerce, the Tallahassee Builders Association and the Florida A&M University Small Business Development Center, are working on potential policy changes and incentives that will help business owners overcome obstacles that can be associated with renting or purchasing office space.

These efforts are designed to not only assist business owners with increasing revenue and operations, but to also drive business to the local real estate industry and local contractors, increase tax dollars as well as promote employment (as business owners will most likely need to acquire staff to help them manage the office buildings).

The program will also help provide information and/or resources to business owners who may not be ready for retail property, but are seeking business development strategies to help get them to that point.

Through the assistance of the EDC, businesses considering relocation can also take advantage of the following information and services: site-selection assistance, labor market analysis, local industry contacts, job training assistance, regulatory assistance and coordination of state and local incentives.

According to EDC Executive Director Beth Kirkland, the vacant property re-use program presents an opportunity for local businesses, organizations, the real estate industry, consumers, the government and the like to unite in taking advantage of this new platform slated to help promote a better economy in Leon County.

?A lot of things have to come together in order for this to work. It takes a lot of pieces coming together to get that final success we are looking for. This is just the first step,? Kirkland said, explaining that everyone pulling together and sharing their resources is the best way to disseminate information about the project and get the ball rolling. ?Without finding the right end-user (to occupy the office space), this project won?t be successful, so it does take marketing (and) getting the word out.?

The coordinators of the property re-use program are currently seeking applications from viable businesses or organizations considering relocating to commercial property to ensure that there is enough interest to move the project forward. Business owners can find a preliminary list of proposed properties at www.taledc.com/vacant. The application deadline is July 6. For more information or to apply to participate in the program contact Carmen Trammell at TrammellC@leoncountyfl.gov or 850-606-5379.

Va wants tough immigration curb; it's already law ...

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ? The results of last week's Quinnipiac Poll question on immigration were clear and loud: Virginia wants a tough Arizona-style "show me your papers" law allowing police to check the legal status of people stopped or arrested for other reasons.

By almost a 2-to-1 ratio, registered Virginia voters surveyed by the respected Quinnipiac University Polling Institute said they favor an Arizona-style crackdown ? at least the police checks provision of Arizona's sweeping law that wasn't voided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Guess what: Virginia put a version of that law in place in 2008, two years before Arizona. It requires Virginia officers to check every person they arrest and take into custody to determine whether they are in the United States legally. Virginia long ago mandated checks on arrests and in many other circumstances, including admission to a state hospital, to obtain a driver's license, Medicaid benefits and, in some cases, employment.

There are dozens of provisions in Virginia's statutes aimed at isolating illegal immigrants. Some go back generations. With an economy still in its sickbed four years after a frightful meltdown, a federal government pilling up $4 billion in new debt daily, and jobs easy to lose and hard to find, paranoia and anger find an easy foil in immigrants, particularly undocumented ones. And as Quinnipiac found, it stirs powerful feelings that politicians can harness to push for more ? even sometimes redundant ? restrictive laws targeting immigrants.

When asked if they supported the Arizona model allowing police to verify the legal status of people stopped or arrested, 64 percent of the 1,673 registered voters surveyed said yes and 31 percent said no while 5 percent offered no answer. The survey, based on telephone interviews, was conducted from July 10-16 and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.4 percentage points.

Asked if Virginia should implement the same policy, 62 percent said yes, 34 percent said no and 4 percent didn't know.

Prince William County, which has a rich blend of Hispanic and other ethnic groups and has been on the front lines of skirmishes over immigration policy for years, tried a similar approach several years ago, but jettisoned it as a budget-buster.

In a twist, when poll respondents were asked what they thought of President Barack Obama's decision to allow young illegal immigrants who came to the United States as children to obtain work permits and avoid deportation, 53 percent favored the decision to 40 percent who did not with 7 percent undecided.

For the past two years, conservative Republican House of Delegates members from Prince William County ? Virginia's premiere testing ground on immigration issues ? have unsuccessfully pushed bills that restate and make marginal advances to Virginia's 4-year-old check-on-arrest law.

"Some people say that what's on the books is already sufficient, but this clarifies the language and makes it more specific," said Del. Scott Lingamfelter, who sponsored the bill in 2011. Del. Richard Anderson, R-Woodbridge, carried the bill this year.

But Lingamfelter, who has announced his candidacy for the 2013 lieutenant governor election, conceded that police "can already make the checks right now. Any locality in the state can do it. It's considered acceptable police work."

This week's poll means the bill is probably bound for another encore before Virginia's GOP-ruled House and Senate starting in January, Lingamfelter said.

Claire Guthrie Gastanaga, the newly installed executive director of the Virginia ACLU who has spent years lobbying the General Assembly on behalf of Latinos and other immigrant groups, voices frustration over it.

"We have at least 50 laws on the books that directly affect immigrants, many of which require some sort of check on immigration status," she said Friday.

In the Legislature, she said, "the first reaction (to the poll) is, 'Well, we need to do something to respond to this public concern.' Well, no you don't because you already have."

And in more ways than one might imagine, according to a list Gastanaga gleaned from Virginia's statutes. The Department of Mental Health, under a law enacted before 1950 during the time of the state's shameful experiment with the discredited pseudoscience of eugenics, must determine the nationality of anyone admitted to a state facility and to report to federal immigration authorities anyone found to be an "alien."

Sheriffs and the Department of Corrections are required under another pre-1950 law to identify "criminal aliens" in the state's jails and prisons and report them.

"We've been at this a long time," Gastanaga said.

Politically, a tough line on illegal immigrants has been generally good for Republicans, said political consultant and retired Virginia Commonwealth University political science professor Robert D. Holsworth. They have to be careful, however, not to overdose on it.

"On one hand, you have a 2-to-1 majority in a poll showing people favor a show-your-papers law," Holsworth said. But the electoral consequences of enacting ever more strident illegal immigration laws could be damage to the GOP's prospects among the fast-growing ethnic and minority populations, he said.

"Then one day legal immigrants hear this and they start to worry and start asking themselves 'Who are you talking about here?' and they start talking about that," Holsworth said.

PST: Another lesson in unfortunate irony of modern fandom

A small, obvious, but still brilliant part of soccer?s information age has been the acknowledgement of fan knowledge: the general acceptance supporters know more about their team than most media, particularly media on regional or national beats. This seems so obvious to us now that it?s hard to believe there was a time when this wasn?t a given. Of course people who live and bleed their teams are likely to know more than somebody synthesizing a league?s worth of data. Just because that knowledge wasn?t punched through a typewriter, put through a press and offered on a street corner didn?t mean it failed to exist.

Having knowledge, however, is not the same as using it wisely. People who?ve built reputations in the soccer information business use more than mere knowledge. They are the best filters of that information. They take the data and describe with a completeness ? an even-handedness ? that?s rarely seen in fan forums. When that description requires them to step onto one side of a debate, they made sure they?ve covered all relevant angles, assuring their depictions can transcend any reasonable accusations of partisanship.

Fanaticism is inherently partisan. You can?t cover yourself in a team?s colors and pretend they don?t obscure your view. At a minimum, it becomes a call you don?t get to make. If you?re conveying information about the Columbus Crew under a yellow and black banner, you?re forcing the reader to pause and consider motive.

In a vast majority of instances, issues are so cut-and-dry that partisanship has no effect on how information is processed. After all, 5-0 loss is bad no matter how much you support the Portland Timbers. How poorly the team played is a little more open to interpretation, though when you throw out the extreme voices on a given message board/comment thread, most fans people see the world through a similar prism.

But there are rare occasions where that prism screws everything up, usually on issues that hit at club identity. We saw this last year with Liverpool when many fans blindly followed Kenny Dalglish?s defense of Luis Suarez. For most fans, opposing Dalglish?s stance on Suarez was tantamount to turning their back on the club. Such was Kenny Dalglish?s stature at Liverpool. Such is the nature of being a supporter.

We also saw this late last season in Genoa, when fans lept onto the field to demand players remove their shirts. It was a powerful measure, one that brought about emotional responses from the team, but it was also completely inappropriate. An emotional response turned dangerous, with fans turning to violence in defense of the identity they?d ascribed to the club.

A similar identity crisis is developing in Milan, and as with the cases in Liverpool and Genoa, fans are letting their passion supersede their judgment. AC Milan ultras are protesting summer transfer window business that?s seen seven prominent players leave the club. A class action lawsuit on the part of season ticket holders alleges false advertising. The club?s started reimbursements. President Silvio Berlusconi is considering making a video addressing the uprising, while supporters recently held a funeral in front of club headquarters?commemorating?the team?s death.

source: Reuters

After a decade at Milan, defender Alessandro Nesta left the club this summer. (Photo: Reuters)

It?s a harsh stance, one that looks downright foolish when you look at the seven transfers. For most of the season it was assumed many of Alessandro Nesta, Clarence Seedorf, Gennaro Gattuso, Pippo Inzaghi and Mark Van Bommel go. Was it shocking to see them all leave together? Of course, especially the first four names, but the five-some averaged 35.8 years old and 11.2 starts. Milan could have been sentimental and kept a couple of them, but the club?s decision to move on is justifiable. It certainly shouldn?t spur a mass uprising.

Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are another story, but consistent with the history of international soccer, every player has a price. Juventus had theirs for Zinedine Zidane. Manchester United had theirs for Cristiano Ronaldo. Just three years ago, Milan had theirs for Kak?, a more clearly motivated by money. The same reasoning applies to the Silva-Ibrahimovic sale. ?As James Horncastle noted on Twitter, the wages saved combined with the transfer fees mean Milan nets ?170 million.

Deconstructed, Milan?s summer business seems to be seven individually justifiable player moves, none of which were done capriciously. Had Paris Saint-Germain not backed an armored truck up to Via Turati, Milan would have probably held on to Silva and Ibrahimovic, and the club certainly could have moved on from their veterans sooner (Inzaghi was 38 and only make seven league appearances last year). Fans, scared the moves signal a new, less competitive era for Milan, are left protesting good business, demonstrations reminiscent of an infant rebelling against a parent?s ?No.?

You won?t find many with distance from Milan (emotional or physical) questioning the Rossoneri?s moves. They were tough decisions, but they were probably good ones. At a minimum, they?re decisions fans should understand, even if they don?t agree with them. There?s no need for funerals, law suits, or the kind of self-defeating view that would keep Milan a loyal-if-old team that could never balance their books for fear of ultra reaction to their taking advantage of a seller?s market.

Then there is that small, obvious irony belying the entire story. None of these assessments ? be they about aging players or the sale of Milan?s stars ? are news to Rossoneri supporters. They know more about Milan than any of us. They know the team was old. They know the club could use money. They know the recent past has seen the high-priced sale of Kak? and the painful departure of Andrea Pirlo. And they know that over the last two seasons, Milan?s had the best team. Still, they protest. They hold their funerals. They file suits.

Understandably, emotion has gotten the best of them. One year removed from winning Serie A, fans have seen a vision of a vastly less-competitive Milan, but with the Rossoneri rumored to be in for Montpelier?s Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa (arguably the best young defender in Ligue 1), it seems unlikely Berlusconi will merely pocket the money. The club still has Alexandre Pato, Robinho, and Alessandro Cassano. They still have Antonio Nocerino, Maximo Ambrosini and Kevin Prince-Boateng. They?ve added Ricardo Montolivo and will bring back the likes of Ignazio Abate, Philippe Mexes, Mathieu Flamini and Sulley Muntari. They should still be a very good team. If they spend some of PSG?s money, they could be a title-contending one.

Not that any this needs to be told to any Milanistas. They know their club is still decent. They know Berlusconi has consistently funded competitive, trophy-winning teams. They just need this moment. Milan ultras need this moment to vent, to act on the emotion spawn from seeing so many favorites go.

But once that emotion is gone, hopefully they can have a good laugh at themselves. A funeral for the Rossoneri? It?s all so dramatic.
