AFGHAN WAR COMING HOME: Expert Looks at the Military Epidemic of PTSD

?We weren?t prepared for a war that?s lasted this long, with that many soldiers who had repeated deployments.? ?U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), chairwoman of the Senate Veterans? Affairs committee, on a recent episode of CNN?s State of the Union.

That is the nutshell assessment of America?s latest and most costly struggle related to our decade-long war in Afghanistan. Through most of the debate about the war?s justification, especially now amidst a weak economy, the issue has been about the financial cost.

But as psychotherapist, Biblical expert and author Dr. Steven Haymon, Ed.D., can explain?and as Murray and the rest of Congress are finding out?there is a greater cost being brought to bear on our military, their families and all Americans.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

This reality of war that has long been unknown is now at the forefront of our collective consciousness. ?But do we know how to respond? And is it too late?

As a guest on your show, Dr. Steve Haymon can reference both his latest published book entitled Stress: Climbing Out of the Pits With God, and his soon-to-be-released new work, The War Within: Combating PTSD With God, to provide some remarkable insight.

?This country desires the ?best of the best?,? explains Haymon, ?because we need to be able to display to all concerned, our training, equipment and strategic superiority when we are tested by war. (But) war has never been just physical?the ability to shoot, kill, capture and subjugate. There has been, and will always be, a mental and emotional aspect of war?that which occurs in the minds and feelings of those individuals carrying out the fight.?

Find out more about this mysterious PTSD demon that claims the lives of 25 soldiers for every one soldier lost on the battlefield. Hear what it takes to overcome it, and what the government should be doing to save these warriors in an overwhelmingly understated debt of gratitude.
