Sometimes, we notice that our carpets are looking a little bit worse for wear and that the endless footprints, pets, spills and odors have taken their toll. If your carpet is stained fairly badly, the only way to get it looking good as new is to get in the professionals. If there are only one or two spots that need attention, however, you could try one of these handy cleaning solutions to see whether they do the trick.
Vinegar Solution
Take a spray bottle and fill it with one part white vinegar and one part water. Shake to combine, then spray the cleaning solution onto the stained areas until they are soaked. You will need to leave the carpet to sit like this for around fifteen minutes before blotting the solution away with a clean, dry sponge. To finish, you will need to rinse the area with some warm water and dry it by placing paper towels over the wet spots.
Ammonia Solution
In a cup filled with water, place a teaspoon of a household ammonia. You can transfer the cleaning solution to a spray bottle or simply place a few drops of it directly onto the carpet from the cup. Only apply a little of this solution at a time, as you need to ensure that the carpet's backing remains dry. Blot at the stain with a sponge, rinse with warm water and dry with a stack of paper towels.
Detergent Solution
Take one litre of water and mix in a quarter of a teaspoon of dishwashing or hand soap (after making sure that it doesn't contain lanolin or another bleaching ingredient). Using a spray bottle, apply the solution to the stained areas and blot at them using a clean sponge. To finish, rinse the areas with warm water and dry with some paper towel.
Water
Believe it or not, small and less noticeable stains may be able to be removed with plain water. Pour or spray some water onto the carpet (to re-hydrate the stain), then blot at them using a clean sponge. If this method does not work, however, you should try one of the above cleaning solutions.
Remember that the sooner you attend to stains, the better the chance you have of completely removing them from your carpet. Leaving them to sit and fester for a few days or even a few weeks will only ingrain them into the carpet fibres further. The above cleaning solutions, however, are pretty effective at removing stains of all ages.
